How do I File a Claim or Inquiry for Lost or Damaged Registered Mail Items?

To file a claim for a domestic Registered Mail™ item, you should file the claim either:

  • Online
  • Or if you do not have access to the Internet, call 1-800-332-0317, Option 9 for instructions to file by mail and for a copy of PS Form 1000, Domestic Claim

This form also files claims for Registered Mail™, Collect on Delivery (COD), and APO / FPO / DPO Registered Mail™.

Either the online system or the PS Form 1000 can also be used to file a Claim for:

  • Insured Mail (includes any mail class purchased with Insurance, i.e. First-Class Mail, Priority Mail)
  • Registered Mail™
  • Collect On Delivery (COD)
  • Priority Mail Express™ (at any value)


To file an inquiry for an international Registered Mail™ item, you should call the International Research Group at 1-800-222-1811. This should be done no sooner than 7 days from the mailing date and no later than 6 months from the mailing date.
